More money for social networks: college sports network Takkle will announce today that it has received additional financing from Sports Illustrated and the New York City Investment Fund. The amount isn’t being disclosed. The company’s original investment came from WMG Investments, Greycroft Partners, IJ Smith Enterprises LLC, and Jack Schneider.
It’s a sign of even closer ties between SI and Takkle: the paid have been cross promoting since at least December 2006. Sports Illustrated also bought sports social network FanNation earlier this year, and it seems probably that the Takkle investment will go the same way.

A new online mapping tool: WorkedHere has launched a social networked crossed with a mapping service that helps you find buddies from your old workplace. Find workplaces, create workplaces and add your profile.
The problem, of course, is that it requires a critical mass of users to be any use: with very few people on the site, the chances of you tracking down an old colleague are slim. No doubt that will improve when WorkedHere launches its planned Facebook app and MySpace widget.

S-Curve, the record label known for hits like “Stacey’s Mom” and the launching of Joss Stone, is re-launching its full service music company and has taken on its first venture for online marketing with its equity stake in Nabbr, a company that creates and distributes viral video players.
The company will be expanding and adding to its larger scope of offerings, looking to the spreading of viral content as well as another tactic of artist management. After a nearly three year absence, S-Curve is coming back with a strong emphasis on Internet marketing, banking on the spreading of its content across social networks with Nabbr’s service. The video players will include video and audio content, as well as tour dates, personal appearance information, contests, merchandise, sales and the ability for artists to chat with fans.
Other Nabbr clients include Justin Timberlake, the Beatles, 30 Seconds to Mars, Amy Winehouse, and other S-Curve artists as well. The music company has also added two artists to its label; We The Kings and Tom Jones. Nabbr is one company that allows traditional media companies to leverage the power of web 2.0.

Jaxtr, the VoIP service that’s integrated with various social networks, has reached 500,000 users worldwide.
You may remember that Jaxtr recently grew to 100,000 less than three months ago. With membership doubling every month, Jaxtr has certainly seen some significant growth this year. Jaxtr is looking to grow even further, as it’s also launching its service in India, Russia, South Africa, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Panama, El Salvador, Jamaica, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Germany, Hong Kong and China.
The vast expansion of Jaxtr means that the global reach and availability of its VoIP service is growing along with social networks that are looking for global reach as well. Making it easier to connect through the Internet offers more options for close communication that isn’t limited to the existing parameters of a cell phone.

Update: Facebook’s new hire Blake Ross reports in the comments that this is a bug and will be fixed. If only Facebook’s bugs were as amusing as MySpace’s.

Argh. Facebook just removed the option to “Skip this Step” when adding a friend: you now have to state what your relationship is with that person before you can connect, then wait for them to confirm that relationship.
No doubt it’s concerned with Facebook’s aim to connect you to real life friends, but it’s also super, super annoying when you have a big backlog of requests.
Anyone else find this ultra-annoying? Leave a comment below; perhaps enough complaints can get this reversed.

Los Angeles-based mobile service provider Amp’d will shut down at 12:01am Tuesday. Existing customers will be able to port their phone numbers to a new service, but Amp’d won’t help them do this, and their will be no customer service after Monday. Amp’d assets will be sold in an auction.
The company had 200,000 customers in April, but dropped half of them when they failed to pay their bills (Amp’d tried to boost subscriber numbers by accepting customers with low credit ratings). The company had taken $360 million in VC funding; more info for existing customers on their website.

San Francisco-based social network hi5 has taken $20 million in funding in a round led by Mohr Davidow Ventures. The site reports 30 million members and 200 million pageviews/day, making it one of the largest players. So why the lack of hype?
Speaking to the company a few months back, they defined themselves as an “international social network” - the features are fairly standard, but the trick was to regionalize more effectively than other sites. Major languages available include English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Romanian.
The fact that hi5 doesn’t have all its users in English-speaking countries probably explains the lack of hype compared to Facebook, MySpace and Bebo.

PayPerPost, the site that pays people to write about certain products and services on their blogs, has launched a Facebook application. For now, its functionality is limited: it lists Marketplace Opportunities, lists the subjects you’ve written about and (mainly) acts as an affiliate advertisement to put on your Facebook profile and make money when your referrals sign up.
Coupled with the Facebook news feed, however, PPP could potentially become an annoyance on Facebook. You can imagine a scenario in which people could be paid for writing on Facebook blogs, posting certain Facebook apps to their profiles or (worse) filling the News Feed with commercial information like ads. It’s a risk that also increases as more Facebook ad networks spring up: hopefully Facebookers will disown friends that use such services. If not, Facebook itself may need guidelines about what constitutes excessive “feed spam”.
